Achieving gender equality in the water domain is crucial for the accomplishment of standing international gender- and water-related commitments, including those enshrined in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development - in particular, SDG 5 (gender equality) and 6 (water and sanitation for all).
However, progress towards the realization of these global promises is critically off track, as demonstrated in the analysis document Taking Stock of Gender Equality Progress in the Water Domain. Gender inequalities have been shown to persist at all levels in the water domain, thereby hindering development progress.
The collaborative Position Paper - Accelerating Gender Equality in the Water Domain: A Call for Action presents concrete recommendations that form the foundation of the Call for Action Initiative with support of the Multi-stakeholder Coalition.
The Call for Action aims to raise awareness, dismantle stereotypes, promote women’s empowerment and urge government institutions and funding agencies to commit concrete support to advancing gender equality in the water domain.
