Australian Launch of the Lancet Commission Report on Gender and Global Health Equity
The University of Adelaide’s Stretton Health Equity and the Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender are set to host the Australian launch of The Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health’s landmark report: Achieving Gender Justice for Global Health Equity.
The Commission is a global, interdisciplinary collective of experts working at the intersection of gender and health. Among them is Professor Fran Baum, Program Director of Stretton Health Equity at the University of Adelaide.
We’re witnessing a troubling global trend where gender rights, including access to sexual and reproductive health services, are being rolled back, said Professor Baum. These developments threaten to undo decades of progress in global health. The resulting political and financial instability is already having serious consequences for health outcomes worldwide.
To address these issues, the Commission has developed comprehensive research and practical recommendations aimed at guiding meaningful action. Their roadmap outlines how applying a gender-justice lens to health policy, programs, and practice can significantly improve population health and reduce disparities.
When gender-responsive approaches are implemented, we see measurable improvements in health outcomes across various sectors, Professor Baum added.
The event will feature a keynote address by Professor Sarah Hawkes, Co-Chair of the Commission and Head of Global Population Health at Monash University, Malaysia. Professor Emerita Raewyn Connell, also a Commissioner and based at the University of Sydney, will speak on the national and international significance of the report.
A panel discussion, led by Professor Baum, will follow and include Professor Hawkes, Professor Sharon Friel (ARC Laureate Fellow and Professor of Health Equity, Australian National University), and University of Adelaide scholars Dr Jared Dmello, Associate Professor Alexandra Peralta, and Professor Megan Warin.
Pursuing gender justice in global health is a collective responsibility, Professor Baum emphasized. This is not a zero-sum pursuit on the contrary, advancing gender equity leads to better health and wellbeing for all in our interconnected world.
