Title:Expert feedback on items for a new multi-dimensional measure of gender euphoria and gender dysphoria.

Poster Presentation

Abstract

Measurement of gender experiences of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNGD) populations has primarily focused on experiences of gender dysphoria (GD), or negative feelings/distress related to misalignment between one’s body/presentation and gender identity. There has been minimal attention in previous research to positive feelings connected to alignment of one’s body/presentation and gender identity, or gender euphoria (GE). To-date there are only a few measures of GD and one for GE; none existing utilizes the same measurement scale to allow for effective comparison between GD and GE. Additionally, spirituality is a core component of both GE and GD that has been mostly left out of prior measures. The present study aimed to address these issues by developing a new scale of GD and GE and seeking expert review to assess content validity. The current study’s scale was designed to cover two domains (GD & GE) each with four sub-domains (body, mind, social, spiritual). For this preliminary content analysis study, 87 items were developed – approximately 10 items per sub-domain. TNGD experts (N = 6) were recruited via targeted online snowball sampling through professional networks. These experts rated and provided qualitative feedback on item appropriateness and fit within their respective domains and sub-domains. Data analysis, applying item content validity index (I-CVI), yielded 78 items that met threshold criteria for content validity. Next steps in the development of this measure will involve scale content validity (S-CVI) analysis of the current dataset, item-refinement, pilot testing, and psychometric evaluation
