Title:Translators’ New Profile as Media Communicators for Shaping Inclusive Perceptions: A Corpus-Based Editing of Gender Identities’ Portrayals in News Releases

Abstract

The paper entitled “Translators’ New Profile as Media Communicators for Shaping Inclusive Perceptions: A Corpus-Based Editing of Gender Identities’ Portrayals in News Releases” presents the challenges of reviewing inclusive language aspects in news releases of various entities (e.g., businesses, NGOs, government bodies). In brief, the adoption of gender-sensitive techniques, such as collective nouns in English, double forms in French, and periphrastic clarifications in Greek, is explored through the building and processing of trilingual corpora consisting of national inclusive language guides. These guides are extracted from official websites (i.e., design.homeoffice.gov.uk, haut-conseil-egalite.gouv.fr, isotita.gr) in the examined national languages (i.e., en, fr, el). By using the corpus management and text analysis software Sketch Engine to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the corpora mentioned above, the power of inclusive language to create equal portrayals (e.g., male-friendly, female-friendly, or non-binary portrayals) of gender identities is revealed. In particular, drawing up gender identities, as expressed through gender-sensitive techniques, facilitates visibility of and equal appeal to diverse social groups in news releases characterized by their function to inform while persuading wider audiences. Finally, promoting the new role of translators as media communicators to edit news releases based on trilingual corpora of inclusive language guides allows for reflecting on and shaping societal perceptions of equal linguistic representation for all gender identities.

Biography

Vasiliki Chelidoni holds a Bachelor’s degree in Translation Specialization from DFLTI (2021), a Master’s degree in Translation Science from the same Department (2023), and is a graduate of the Foreign Language Teaching Program, obtaining a Teaching Proficiency Certificate in English and French (2022).

Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate at DFLTI with her research focusing on the use of corpora to study the adoption of inclusive language in drafting and translating EU administrative documents. Since April 2024, she has been appointed as a member of the Gender Equality Committee (GEC) of the Ionian University for a three-year term.
