Title:Towards a feminist mediation practice: Ethics and relational care in interpreting gender-based violence (GBV)

Oral Presentation

Abstract

Language mediators working in contexts of migration and gender-based violence (GBV) face emotional burdens and ethical dilemmas that put them at risk of vicarious trauma and emotional dissonance (Costa, 2020). Their work takes place within gendered power structures and institutional asymmetries, where trust, positionality, and care are central. Inspired by feminist theories of care, voice, and positionality (Butler, 2004; Inghilleri, 2005), this study conceptualizes mediation as a relational and political practice that extends beyond words to include the emotional and cultural dimensions of survival. The empirical corpus consists of narrative interviews with mediators working with survivors of gender-based violence and a gender-sensitive training questionnaire exploring mediators’ perceptions of self-care strategies, professional boundaries, training, and institutional support. These data were analyzed using a mixed methods approach combining thematic, corpus-based, and statistical analyses. The results reveal three main dimensions: (1) trauma and violence related to prostitution, abuse, and trafficking; (2) marginalization and power imbalance at the intersection of gender and migration; and (3) the emotional and ethical burden of mediation, which can lead to vicarious trauma and burnout. The practical application of this approach requires structured gender-sensitive training, trauma-informed practices, sustained supervision, and peer support, all of which are crucial for mediators’ well-being. Additionally, improved access to multilingual, rights-based information and digital platforms for training and networking will further increase resilience (Degani & De Stefani, 2020; Naimi, 2022).
