Wendy Martin is a Professor of American Literature and American Studies in the English Department at Claremont Graduate University. Her scholarship focuses on early American literature, with particular emphasis on women writers and female American poets across centuries. She also teaches courses in 20th-century American drama, autobiography, jazz aesthetics, and the American frontier.
Previously, she taught at Queens College (CUNY) and served as visiting faculty at Stanford University, UNC–Chapel Hill, and UCLA. At CGU, she has held leadership roles including Chair of the English Department and Director of the Kingsley & Kate Tufts Poetry Awards, and serves on several editorial boards.
In 1972, Martin founded Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, promoting cross-disciplinary scholarship on women. Her recent book, The Routledge Introduction to American Women Writers (2016), explores women’s literary contributions from the 17th century to the present.
