Valerie Jenness is a Professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society and in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. She is the author of four books, including, most recently, Appealing to Justice: Prisoner, Grievances, Rights, and Carceral Logic (with Kitty Calavita, University of California Press), and many articles published in sociology, law, criminology, and gender and sexuality journals.
Her work on prostitution, hate crime, prison violence, transgender prisoners, and prison grievance systems has been honored with awards from the American Society of Criminology, the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, the Pacific Sociological Association, the Law and Society Association, the Western Society of Criminology, and Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights in North America.
