We know that the Catholic Church was vehemently opposed to homosexuality and condemned it strictly, calling it the ‘unmentionable sin.’ But reality has always been quite different, and this throughout time. In fact, a close analysis of medieval and early modern literature demonstrates that many writers at least toyed with the idea of gender reversals and homosexual attractions. Cross-dressing was not so unusual, and living out gay desires even under the horrible legal conditions then was not fully impossible. The issue is, of course, highly problematic, but a careful analysis can open many meaningful perspectives regarding pre-modern literature and hence society.
