Europe's innovation potential is at risk as gender disparities persist in STEM careers and leadership. Despite women outnumbering men in university education, they remain underrepresented in key sectors like ICT, where only 22% of doctoral graduates are women. With just 9% of inventors being female and 98% of EU research lacking a gender dimension, these gaps exacerbate skills shortages and threaten long-term competitiveness.
Advancing gender equality in the European Research Area
The European Union has advanced gender equality in R&I by requiring a Gender Equality Plan for Horizon Europe eligibility. Most projects must integrate a gender dimension to enhance research quality and relevance. Additionally, the program aims for greater gender balance, targeting 50% women in boards, expert groups, and evaluation committees.
These advancements align with the European Research Area (ERA) policy agenda, which has prioritized gender equality and the integration of gender perspectives in R&I since 2012. Upcoming initiatives include measures to combat gender-based violence in academia and expanding the Women TechEU program to support women-led deep-tech startups.
